   About Us: Draft MLA Letter

Dear [MLA NAME],

I am writing because I am very concerned about the news that Cumberland Public Libraries (CPL) and public libraries around the province are facing a continued funding freeze that will result in significant cuts to library services.

The funding freeze coupled with increases to operating costs and the cost of living will result in a $34,000 budget deficit in 2017-2018 for CPL. In previous years, the library has cut online databases, its movie license, and reduced new book purchases. This year the library is forced to either reduce library hours across the county or permanently close a library branch. Both of these options will be highly detrimental to the residents of Cumberland County.

Our libraries are essential to our rural communities. Without a library in their community, many people would not be able to access books, DVDs, audiobooks, computers, and WiFi. Library programs such as Summer Reading Clubs, Children and Adults Reading Together, and book clubs promote literacy and recreation while bringing people together.

If the government wants to provide essential library services to the citizens of Nova Scotia, it needs to commit to adequate and sustainable funding. I look forward to your response. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
